Statistical Analyzer:

I found the dorm life, the student life and the religious life untolerable. The academics aren't worth the rules. As a rule, the brightest and best do not go there. However, some graduates do go on to good grad schools and, a few, become successful in business. If you're into rote memorization, extremely conservative Christian theology, useless rules, and right-wing politics, check it out. Please visit before going. Prospective students are allowed an overnight dorm visit - do it if you're thinking about it. While you're visiting, ask to see the student handbook, that will tell you volumes.

While some people say they never learned to think for themselves, I had the opposite experience - I learned to think, but I was told by several faculty members, not to, the administration wouldn't appreciate my views. I was so glad to go (I used to be a fundamentalist Christian), even happier to leave. College is a time to discover your own boundaries, beliefs and value system. Discovering those things later in your 20's in much more difficult. The only good thing I got from BJU was a deep appreciation of the arts.

My mother died recently and a BJU grad did her funeral - it was the most inappropriate experience I've ever experienced - he (no "shes") actually preached a hell-fire and damnation sermon. Of course, on the flip side, everybody that was there was expected to know 4 verses of "Amazing Grace" from memory. If that's the best BJU grads can do for a funeral sermon, they can have the place.
