After discharging from the Air Force in 1989 I left for BJU and so began many good years there. I went into the 5 year missionary aviation program. The downside was having to enter the School of Applied Studies (SAS). This was like going back to High School. I ran into so many student attitudes that were poor and rebellious. Perhaps they HAD to attend, I don't know. It would have been better for everyone had they simply left rather than drag so many others down with their arrogant attitudes. If I had to do it over again I would not attend the SAS. As far as the rules were concerned, they were no big deal if you weren't there to do things your way. Besides, I think most 18 year olds have a few things to learn! Also, lest you think I grew up in a BJU environment, I didn't. As a matter of fact I didn't first hear about BJU until I was 19 and stationed stateside. I grew up in a non-Christian home and graduated from a public High School. BJU was just what the doctor ordered. It was a relaxing place where you knew what was expected. You weren't surrounded by hateful and vindictive self-absorbed people bent on harm and treating others poorly, like many public schools I've come in contact with. The faculty and staff, for the most part, were there for others and not themselves. Most of them could make "big bucks" teaching at other institutions. So, If you want to drink alcohol, smoke, snort coke and meth, indulge in pornography and have pre-marital sex, BJU isn't the place for you…don't come. If you want to attent a school that is looking out for YOUR best interest and that of the testimony of Christ, This place is for you. You will enjoy the people and the atmosphere. I've found that those that get "shipped" are those that buck the system and try every way possible to do things to satisfy themselves. Their gripe is usually the result of getting caught. BJU holds their people responsible, Faculty, Staff and students. I've seen a few faculty and staff members that were either asked to leave or were fired. Don't be so foolish to think that this isn't done in every school and business in America. If any institution wants to maintain a standard of business and personnel conduct, you must hold those members responsible. As long as the school holds to their testimony concerning their faith in Jesus Christ and His word, I can stand by the school and will do so.
