I attended my undergrad (public) school out of state. I came here mainly because friends gushed on how great the academics were. First off, let me say point blank…these guys are amazing academics. But let me now add to that by saying few are good teachers. Most students here live on campus and many don't work. The graduate courses are mixed with undergrad's so you have to spend time with their youthful exuberance. The teachers assign entire books weekly to read; many of which are primary sources. If you aren't catholic not only will you not fit in, but you'll be humiliated at the begining of class when you can't recite the Lords Prayer as quickly as everyone else. I've been in classes where undergrads actually speak negatively about other teachers because "They didn't really get a Phd" or "They got their phd from a public school…not one of the good ones" We had a peace activist lecture at the school and students derailed her because she "didn't have a phd, and therefore had no credit to speak here." They are extremely self absorbed. If it exisits outside of their doctrine or UD…they know very little about it. Ironically I managed to also find one my favorite instructors ever here. It's hit or miss…6 bad instructors and 1 wonderful one. |
