I did end up feeling kind of claustrophobic by the second half of my time there, but I didn't study abroad so I felt that desperation to get out of that little community more than a lot of my friends who spent part of junior year out of the country. I wish I could have gone to Scripps for two years in order to grow-up and get liberal artsed out, and then transfer to a larger university, but of course I would never have done that and left my beloved friends. Downsides: Scripps' bureaucracy can be kind of infuriating and sometimes the rules are patronizing (all the other Claremont colleges have a lot more freedom in terms of having friends in their rooms, having parties, etc.) Also the Claremont colleges are cliquey and a little weird, so it's not at all a given that you're going to have male friends. It may require some work and an outgoing personality. Positives: Safe, quiet, clean, amazing classes that will blow your mind if you're a devoted intellectual not all that concerned about developing job skills ASAP. I'm in a master's program at University of Chicago now and I have to say I think I worked harder as an undergrad at Scripps, so the college will serve you well in terms of whipping you into shape. |
