The classes on diversity are 20 years behind the times, which is no surprise given how establishment and dominant culture the stewards of the school are (versus their opinions of themselves). The president of the school was quick to send out a memo condemning the appearance of nooses in East Coast colleges, but still has only one tenured African-American professor and lists the winter break as "Christmas Break". If you want a school that is small, gives you good hands-on training and you have good self-direction, then you might fare well here. If you really want challenging training, none of the California Psy.D. schools will cut it. Apparently, The Wright has better training than most in California, but the majority of the people in my class find their academics to be weak. Socially, The Wright is regressed, elitist, competitive and most folks dislike each other by the third year. It's an institutional problem, but like most such problems they are swept under the carpet by a lazy administration. In the end, despite my dislike of large universities, I wish I had gone to Cal or moved East for a better educational experience, and I have heard a number of my classmates voice the same sentiment. All of this said, one should not judge the students based on the school; a great number of us have expanded our educations and skills through other studies. The school manages to draw motivated students. |
