As UPS becomes more well-known and selective it is slowly becoming a more diverse and interesting place to be, but it'll take at least 10 years before it really becomes anything that special. Don't get me wrong, it could be a lot worse, but UPS is a rather unexceptional place right now. I'll break up my points into a little list that's easier to read :-)

  • like I said this is beginning to change, but most of the time when you ask people where they're from they're gonna say Portland (and by that they usually mean boring suburbs like Beaverton but they say Portland anyway), Colorado or Minnesota. Coming in a close second is the Seattle/Tacoma area (i.e. Bellevue, Federal Way, etc). This school's idea of diversity is people from Alaska and Idaho, and occasionally they recruit black kids within the surrounding community. It gets kind of monotonous after a while. Oh yeah, and the kids from Portland are OBSESSED with Portland, it's kind of annoying.
  • because everyone is from the same places, it gets really cliquey here really quickly, which means that if you don't find a "group" to be in within the first 2 weeks of school you're kind of screwed socially.
  • the university hasn't had enough housing to accomodate its students for 20 years, which lead to people being forced to live off-campus and from there people CHOOSING to live off-campus. So basically after your freshman or sophomore year people start looking for off-campus houses. I think this is cool in some ways because it offers something different from your typical private school, but it makes the annual housing lottery weird and stressful and it makes it so that campus life at night is pretty dead after 7 PM or so. This is also the administration's fault, because they use the apathy as an excuse to not arrange anything to happen on campus late at night. Which means that the entire campus will go to the same 3 frat/off-campus-house parties, and it's really awkward and boring. And then whoever doesn't like to drink every weekend is left in the dust.
  • going off from the last point, the off-campus aspect means that the only people who are active on-campus with clubs, etc are the people who live on-campus, the people in frats/sororities since their houses are right off-campus, and then whoever else happens to care. It reminds me of high school - people show up for the first club meeting for the free pizza or whatever, and then everyone disappears. It's a little depressing. But part of this is because everyone worries about money so everyone is working during most of their free time. which leads into my next point-
  • I like UPS because it's really not a stereotypical private school where Muffy sails on daddy's private yacht and pops her collar- people are mostly middle class-ish, and everyone works and is down-to-earth and respectful of the non-professor staff. The problem is that almost EVERYONE here needs substantial financial aid (95% of the kids here are on some form of fin. aid), but UPS isn't quite at a place yet where it can give sufficient financial aid to everyone. If you were a high achiever in high school they'll throw $$$ at you (that's why I could afford to attend UPS), but otherwise most people are only getting a small grant, work study and tons of loans for a 40K school. People don't have a ton of time for hobbies or things they might be passionate about because they have to work and do school, and people are really stressed all the time. It makes the atmosphere kind of blah and depressing and apathetic. meanwhile, the school keeps renovating buildings that don't need renovating, and that's where the money goes. I think UPS would be a better place to be if it could afford to make itself truly affordable to its students.
  • UPS has pretty good sports teams but I'm not sure how many people actually care, which is sad.
  • Tacoma is really pretty but there isn't a whole lot to do here unless you're an outdoorsy person, which means you go to rainier to go skiing every weekend you can. people like to call tacoma "tacompton" and say that tacoma is all ghetto and scary and sketchy, and some parts of it are, especially at nighttime, but it isn't that bad. some people are really sheltered and need to get a clue I guess.
  • the academics here are really good. business and biology seem to be really common majors, but those are common majors everywhere. this is really overall not a very intellectual school, so I'm not sure how much the faculty here are appreciated.
  • overall UPS has a lot of potential, but right now it's kind of boring and blah. they're beginning to recruit a lot of kids like me who are "high profile" (really good students, or kids who went to private prep schools), but UPS doesn't really have much to back up its reputation right now, so a TON of kids in my class are thinking about transferring. a lot of them probably won't because they've made friends here. and I have too, but I don't want to waste any more of what are supposed to be some of the best years of my life here.
