Coming to NYIT was one of the biggest mistakes I ever made. I came in expecting to get a good education, but in my time here, I can't say this school even offers that. The students don't want to learn and the professors don't seem to care. I was an electrical engineering major, and I can say with conviction that my classmates don't even understand the basic, fundamental principles of engineering. I never felt as if my professors cared, and my fellow students always seem to just cheat their way through their classes (in the end it's the students that are hurt).

NYIT also has no dorms of their own. Residence is off-campus at SUNY Old Westbury, which is about a 15 minute drive form NYIT (you have to take a very unreliable shuttle bus back and forth). I hated living in the dorms, because they were always dirty, run-down, and the food was absolutely terrible. Everyone else I know who lives in the dorms also hates it, and the fact that dorms aren't on campus, really takes away from the college experience.

As a result of having no dorms and an apathetic student body, the school also lacks a social life and any sense of school spirit. Students come to school, go to class, and go home right afterwards. The vast majority of the student body does not make any attempt to get involved in school.

The first time I visited Tech, I thought the campus looked pretty, but after a few weeks I realized that it's really not. The buildings are old and poorly maintained, and when you step inside the classrooms it doesn't even look like a real college.

Overall, I wouldn't say that Tech was all negative, and after all I did make some friends and I tried to get involved. But after one year, I decided to transfer, and let me tell you I was not alone. NYIT students often mock the school by giving it the acronym "Next Year I'll Transfer," and if you decide to come here you'll see it's definitely true. Most people realize that this school is very limiting, and not worth the money at all (despite what they may tell you). My advice would be to not go to school on Long Island, as most of them are pretty much "crappy commuter schools." But if you do indeed want to stay on the Island, then go to Stony Brook or Hofstra, where you can at least get better value for your money.
