Don't expect a pleasant experience when dealing with housing, police, dining services or parking services. The lower level courses are like pre-school, but the upper level courses are mostly excellent. A lot of lower level professors are not native English speakers and are hard to understand. Surprisingly, the registrar's office is nice, as are the departments I've encountered. Commuting is definitely the way to go- I moved off campus after the experience from HELL with a roommate that used to destroy my belongings- Housing wouldn't grant a roommate change. If you don't have a car, don't rely on the CUE bus either. Socially, it's like high school all over again and is very cliquey, which is obvious by the segregation in the Johnson Center, the main place on campus. The food is bad- avoid Chao Hall at all costs. It would be much better if it were located closer to a Metro or if it were located completely in Arlington. I find it hard to get involved in activities that occur because I work and commute. Most activities are at night, and the parking is so difficult on campus that it's not worth attending. If you commute, don't get there any later than 9:00, even if your classes are later- parking won't happen. The school is pretty poorly run with a terrible administration. I feel safe in Fairfax overall, but there are a lot of dark wooded areas on campus and walking back to your car at night feels eery sometimes, especially if you have to go "over the river and through the woods." Don't laugh, there actually is a parking lot where you have to do that to get to it. Overall, I'd give Mason a C- at the highest because of the terrible admin, lack of social life, and let-downs that it's given me. |
