Statistical Analyzer:

I am a first year student at Colby and love the college. I have found it to be as advertised, with excellent academics and faculty who really care about teaching and about their students. The small school atmosphere works for me, since it creates an environment where it's pretty easy to meet people with different majors and interests. Even though Waterville is a small city without a great deal to offer, there is always plenty to do on campus, including parties, concerts,athletic events, speakers etc. For me the small school has also worked well since I've been able to participate on a varsity team, which wouldn't have happened at a Division 1 school (I wouldn't have wanted to do it at that level even if I made the team, since it takes too much away from academic and social life). Some of my friends here are on two or more varsity teams and the coaches are fine with that—most also study abroad and again, the coaches expect it. They actually mean it when they say academics come first and although all my coaches in high school said that, none ever really meant it before. It did take me awhile to love Colby as much as I do now. First semester I felt a little lost and felt the isolation of the location more keenly, but I don't think first semester would have been easy anywhere. Now I see the location and tight-knit atmosphere of a small LAC as a gift. I come from the suburbs of a large city and will probably spend most of my life, including grad school, in cities or suburbs. You can only be at a place like this once in your life and I wouldn't trade the experience.
