This is for two reasons: UF managed to pull together a fantastic faculty and two, UF as a whole pulls the brightest students in Florida who could have gone to better schools but choose to go to UF b/c "it's free", and usually philosophy students are smart anyway (I promise I'm not biased). Thus, the phil department is great in my opinion b/c the professors are brilliant or at least nuts enough to make it interesting, and the students provide for good debate and like-minded colleagues. You probably won't find the average UF student here (Greek, materialistic, flaky) which is a nice change. You can absolutely get a quality education at UF, you just need to find the right crowd of people, latch onto the good professors, and watch yourself rise above the rest (the rest being in a beer-induced coma). |
