Landscape Architecture Student:

Over all, Texas Tech is a good school. My only real complaint is that the math department relies too much on foreign profs. 80% do not speak English as their first language, and of those 50% don't speak English well. Consider yourself lucky to find an American (especially Texan) prof in a math class. Otherwise, faculty is very friendly and helpful. Bad profs are rare, but like anywhere, they do exist.

In the LARC department, the faculty is knowledgeable and helpful. You do get criticized when needed, and rewarded as well. The facilities for the department (Pavilion and old animal science building anyway)are in need of updating, but the new PSS building is decent with good access to technology.

On the technology side, most Microsoft software (Windows XP and Vista too) is very affordable and even free if you download it from the school! This will save you HUNDREDS of dollars, and there is free tech support for any computer ailments. There is WiFi all over campus, and it is fast with each student having access to 6+ Mbps. And if you live off campus there is a free VPN service giving you access to University servers.

Aesthetically, the school has some good Spanish Renaissance Architecture (the only exception are buildings built between 1940 and 1980). The landscaping is pretty nice, but could be maintained better. Having said that, it is still far better than most schools; and you will be pleased with the nice views, and open spaces. The SUB is probably the best-designed building on campus so far, but a new BA building is being constructed, as is a new Recreation pool with slides and a river.

Speaking of recreation, the Rec center is huge, with lots to do, and even includes rock climbing and in indoor track. There are many open fields for when you fee like playing football with your buddies, and there are plenty of places to kick back and study or read, or whatever. And on game days, the entire city turns into a big party, and the parking lots fill with over 10,000 people tailgating. Get too drunk and you get a P.I., but stay within means, and you'll have a blast!
