I'm a second year New Media Design & Imaging student at RIT (it's similar to Graphic Design but more awesome). I read some worrying reviews right before I came here but I decided to attend RIT anyway because they have such a great New Media Design program, and I'm really glad I did. I love it here.

ACADEMICS

Almost all of my art and design professors have been extremely knowledgeable, skilled, helpful, and approachable. All students are on a first-name basis with their professors and are able to get help when they need it. The teachers give really challenging but useful assignments and provide excellent feedback. We've also been exposed to some really great real-world design challenges that have lead many of my classmates to get amazing internships and co-ops.

I do find that my liberal arts classes are less satisfying and generic, but I've always hated liberal arts classes anyway and I only take them because I have to, so I don't know if that's the university's fault or my own issue.

SOCIAL

The social scene at RIT isn't as hoppin as big state universities, and your personal experiences hinge on who you meet. I was lucky enough to live with a lot of awesome people who love to party when I lived in the dorms freshmen year, and they've become my best friends. We party every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night, and have sooo much fun. But on the other hand, I know some people who never really met people they clicked with, and they were pretty lonely on weekends.

Basically, parties at RIT do happy, and they're fun—but they won't just fall into your lab like at a big state school. You have to know people. I suggest living in the dorms as a freshmen—you can usually meet cool people that way. If not, just try talking to people who seem sweet and you'll have a great time at RIT.
