I am a black student so coming to Loyola was a definite culture shock even though I had been in predominately white schools my whole life. The people at Loyola were upper middle class and had totally different views on life than I did. Luckily we had an African American orientation prior to the regular move in date so I got to meet some other minority students on campus. This truly helped me to enjoy my years at Loyola. I can honestly say that I never went bar hopping on York Rd. or Fells Point. I went to a few parties hosted by black sororities and fraternities at other colleges. I also ventured out. Coming from an urban neighborhood I was not afraid to get on the bus/train to get places. I went downtown and did lots of things in the Baltimore area, besides Towson Mall. The academics at Loyola was top notch although I don't know how some students made it through drinking 5 nights out of the week. Easy As don't exist so be prepared to put in some work. The professors are helpful and want to see you succeed, after all a drop out or failure only messes up Loyola's pass percentages. But believe me you will not get a free ride. Many student assimilate into the homogeneous Loyola culture. If you know you are a follower and are easily influenced by others this will probably happen to you. I managed to remain an individual while there so it is possible. The dorms are great although living with so many people can be trying. I would recommend Loyola for the academics. If you are not Caucasian and really into your culture you may find some difficulty being here. Don't be afraid to be the voice of dissension in your classes or outside of them. Believe it or not the teachers appreciate someone having a different viewpoint and get tired of the snooty, stuck up, drunk kids too. |
