On this, and any college—do your research and not just online on the college website. Stay away from colleges with very low graduation rates. More importantly, if a college has gone over 10 years with one of the lowest graduation rates, you know something is wrong. Some colleges, such as South Dakota School of Mines, similar to Minot State had very low graduation rates, however, they went to the source of the problem to correct it. When you ask South Dakota School of Mines, they now proudly tell you the steps they took to raise their graduation rates. Conversely, Minot State has not. In reading the meeting minutes pertaining to graduation rates on the Minot State website, their explanation is that the students don't apply themselves and Minot State staff "are so disappointed in their students". In fact, I know most of my classmates did; nevertheless, every semester close to 70% dropped out. Realistically, you know if "students not applying themselves" were the root of the problem, ALL state universities in US would have an approximate 30% graduation rate for the past 10 years, which is not the case. Best advice: Find a college with high graduation rates that you can afford, and that has the program you love.
