I transferred to VCU after a negative experience at another university. VCU was my safety-school, it is in-state and the tuition is less than many other state schools. The majority of students live off-campus after their freshman year but live in the Fan, Carver or Jackson Ward, nearby neighborhoods that surround the campus. Generally, the student body seems pretty apathetic. In my lecture classes the room was filled to capacity at the beginning of the year but as time went on, nearly half the class would stop coming. There are several general education classes VCU requires to take depending on your major, many of these are easy which could account for the widespread absences in my lecture courses. Still, the students here seem to take academics lightly here, although there are many exceptions in the VCU's social sciences, art and medical departments.

VCU is in Richmond which is the state capital. It is a blue-collar city with a few big corporation headquarters downtown. The city has a number of vegetarian options, music venues (mostly local music) and bars for those that are over 21. Nightlife for those under 21 are 18 and over nights at one of the nearby clubs. There are some parties that are mostly off-campus and pretty lame. First Fridays is held on the first Friday of every month and its a great opportunity to check out local music and art. It's a nice city but the way the people talk about this place, you'd think it was coolest place for thousands of miles. Embrace the VCU and Richmond but don't let the city suck you in, it'll spit you out with tattoos, a poor taste in music and maybe you'll graduate on time, but probably in five-six years with a weak degree.
