If you want a good education for a great price, look no further than SUNY's Farmingdale State College on Long Island. The education programs are great with a good faculty throughout. However, good luck getting in, and for that matter, coming back. The administration at this school is absolutely atrocious. Phones are never answered, calls are never returned, and policies are ridiculous. It's very difficult to speak to someone on the phone and when you finally do, they can't do anything for you. Things as simple as a change of address require a fax or a mailed letter with a signature. Are you kidding me, who in gods name has a fax machine or writes letters anymore? This is the year 2010! And never mind the fact that I've provided my school ID number and/or SSN over the phone and that a signature can easily be faked. On top of it, on the rare occasion that I had access to a fax machine, I sent them a change of address once by fax and they never applied it… so now I need to do it again. Fortunately I live close enough to the school that if needed I can stop in. Albeit gas prices are significantly higher on Broadhollow Rd, but I can get there without making an entire day of it. But what of the many students who live hours away in upstate New York? Are they supposed to just drive 4 hours to the campus, just to speak to a counselor or representative? With this school, odds are the entire trip would be wasted anyway.

Campus life is an absolute joke. Do not reside at this school. I repeat, DO NOT RESIDE AT THIS SCHOOL. Commute, you'll associate with more people as a commuter than you will as a resident. There are absolutely no activities to do other than play basketball, swim (on the rare occasion that the pool is open), and workout. By the way, the free gym is never open so you'll have to drop $50 on top of the academic fee to work out in a less than satisfactory gym with a bunch of typical Long Island meatheads watching you. If you're a low key weight trainer, this place isn't for you. It's uncomfortable to be in, knowing you're being watched and judged constantly by students that haven't yet realized that they're no longer in high school. Don't get me wrong, there are a ton of great students at this school. In fact, the friends I have on campus as well as my suite mates are some of the best people I've ever met. But be prepared to deal with a bunch of immature brats of the typical Long Island fashion. If that's not bad enough, try asking long time staffers about their memories of the wonderful activities on campus that are no longer active, such as a bowling alley, out door pool, and on campus bar. The idea that the most boring campus in the state used to be fun is agonizing at times.

All in all, I'm glad I chose SUNY Farmingdale because I got a great education and met some people who I consider life long friends. But I chose Farmingdale because it was the best education in Graphic Design for the price, with Pratt and SVA being far out of my price range. I recommend this school to all students who can't afford to take their desired major at a private school, but do your research and do it well. The most important thing to get out of college is a good education. If you can afford a school with a better program then don't look back. And if at all possible, avoid SUNY Farmingdale at all costs.
