Let me preface my review by stating that I never intended on coming to SUNY Geneseo.I spent my 1st year in college here because I had not gotten into my top choices as a senior in high school. Knowing that Geneseo would serve no more to me than a stepping stone, I made the financially prudent decision to build up my academic resume at the lowest possible monetary cost

To prospective students that believe Geneseo to be a

public honors college
, I declare this…

GENESEO BREEDS MEDIOCRITY!

Here is a quick run-down of what you will find here…

  • Academics: Some professors are friendly and helpful, but expect to encounter many professors who couldn't care less if they convey the material well enough for the students to understand. You will often find this among the math and science departments. As a result, students are often required to educate themselves solely out of a textbook or are sent to the "learning centers" to be tutored by their peers.
  • Food: Unhealthy and extremely overpriced. The high school cafeteria food that you have long grown tired of is back with a vengeance. But this time, you can't get out of paying for it because it's forced on you when living on-campus. In addition, the operational hours are extremely inconvenient, especially on the weekend.
  • Weather: Cold, but not bone-chilling. September and October will be relatively warm, but expect to be draped in clothing until mid-April.

    Campus and Surroundings: Geneseo is poorly funded and it shows. Things around the school are often broken, closed-off, or in bad condition. The town itself is not much better. The sights and smells are not very pleasing to the senses.

    Social life: Dead. Greek life isn't as wild as it used to be after someone died of alcohol poisoning during the Spring semester of 2009, so don't expect to have as much fun you'd think. For those who abstain from drug use, you are gonna have to make your own fun. This often means watching paint dry.

    People: Intellectually vapid and socially inept.

    Yes, you will find those who are smart and do study, but a good portion the students are incredibly dumb and lazy, which results in many failing or skidding by on doing the bare minimum to pass.

    You find that a majority of your peers here are the people in high school that you went out of your way to avoid.A lot of Geneseo students have never been in romantic relationships, worked to resolve conflicts peacefully, or have had any profound experiences in life.

    In closing, Geneseo is not the school that it it chalked up to be. If you can afford to, go elsewhere. If you can't, make the best of it. You have my sympathy…

    Good luck and God bless.
