I was at Southeastern for my entire undergraduate career before moving on to get my masters out of state. Though I can only speak for my specific experience and those of my close friends, the overall impression of Southeastern is as such:

The best thing about this school is the faculty and intimate learning environment. Most of the professors seem broken because of the lack of interest by the student body, so if you show any initiative and interest in your education they will shower you with help and support well beyond what they are required. This is, however, a double edged sword. Because the teachers are so not used to people being interested, it leads to an overall mediocre learning experience for the neutral minded. As stated in an above (or below?) review, Southeastern is like high school. People are usually there because of friends, or they dropped out of LSU, and most because their parents are forcing them to get a degree. This means that almost no one will be interested in learning, and most classes are like stepping into a funeral home.

This isn't to say that you will not get a good education there if you try. Most people that go there just do the absolute minimum they have to in order to pass, and that is their prerogative, though if you are willing to put in some elbow grease, get to know your professors, and become best friends with the library, you will get a first class education. It is like any other school: you get out of it what you put into it. Why most give this school negative reviews is because they are used to people holding their hands and pushing them to get involved and interested in the subject, rather than knuckle down and carve out their own future. You will not get that here. If all you want to do is pass, you can certainly do so with the greatest of ease. Though, if you want an education, the teachers and resources there are absolutely satisfactory (and even well beyond satisfactory if you are interested in primary and secondary education, or nursing).

Do not listen to the comments and reviews bashing the social life of Hammond. My only response to that is: why would you go to a school for the social life? I understand the perks of a city with an active bar and club scene, but to discount the college simply because people go to New Orleans and Baton Rouge during the weekends is a ridiculous notion. In fact, I see that as Hammond's most valuable asset: all the loud, obnoxious people leave during the off hours. Hanging out with friends is fun, but choosing a school based solely on your ability to do so efficiently is only a recipe for disaster.
