Reed is for misfits. It is gradually becoming slightly more normal, or maybe that is just what seeing incoming freshmen makes us think. If you feel like you don't fit in elsewhere, and consider yourself bright and unique, come to Reed.

If I had to write this two years ago, I would have said don't come to Reed. I would have said you will lose yourself in a meaningless but fascinating abyss of delusional and narcissistic academia..

Now, Reed has an environmental studies program, a more progressive humanities program, and more viable opportunities for interdisciplinary majors. The facilities are beautiful and Reed has a great endowment that it lavishes on its hard-working students. I would say: take advantage of the interesting classes and amazing extracurricular activities (like free rock climbing, outdoor leadership programs, etc) that the college makes available to students. Even if you don't do all your reading or get above a 3.0, you are making it at a really good and well-recognized school. Don't let academics get you down. Here at Reed, you are responsible for your own education. Even if you don't give 100% to every class, don't worry. Live a little. Take the time (even if it feels like you don't have it) and get in touch with yourself and what gets you excited about living. Reed gives you that freedom ? take it, and say thank you. Learn what you want to contribute to in the world ? life isn't all about absorbing information ? what good is it to anyone else if you never apply it? Pay attention to when you have a big assignment due and put about 60-80% of the effort you should into it, the rest of the time, just do what interests you. Explore.

Reed might not (probably won't) get you a job. But it might get you into more school, internships, or creative projects that might help you design a neat job for yourself. And it might give you the freedom and resources to really hone in on what you care the most about.

Love Reed, Love Life!
