I transferred to UMaine from Bryn Mawr College in PA. After spending my freshman year at BMC, I realized that a liberal arts school could not give me the field experience and specified major that I wanted. I transferred to UMaine in the summer of 2011, and I am very happy with my choice. I am now a Wildlife Ecology major with a minor in Psychology and in Zoology. I was in the Honors College for about 2 weeks, but I dropped out because I found the students and faculty to be arrogant and condescending. The Wildlife Ecology department here is excellent: the labs are fun but challenging, and you learn to write really good lab reports. Unlike at a liberal arts college, you learn actual skills instead of wasting away in the classroom. The professors are all very knowledgeable and approachable. There are many things to do on campus, whether you like parties, movie nights, clubs, etc. I am part of the student chapter of the Wildlife Society, but there are clubs for every major and every interest. UMaine has several fraternities and sororities, and most parties are held in the frat houses: I personally have never gone to one, but I've heard they're fun. We also have a club called Curva right next to campus that accepts all ages. I live off-campus in a nearby town, and apartments and rental houses are really affordable in the area. The food on campus tastes good, and there's a relatively good assortment of vegetarian options. If you're vegan or gluten-free, there really are not many options in the dining halls, but there is a nearby grocery store called Hannaford. The dorms are well-designed, but the walls are very thin: If you're a quiet person like me you'll probably want to move off campus as soon as possible, as dorm living at any school is quite chaotic. If you like partying though, then you shouldn't have a problem. This is a great school if you like the outdoors and don't mind the cold: I'm from Virginia, and so far I've survived the winter! We are right next to Bangor International Airport and not too far from Bar Harbor, Portland, and Freeport.
