I will review HPU based on three aspects: Academic rigor, atmosphere, and campus security. This is a rather long review. Therefore, I will give you the Cliff Notes version up front: Run like Hell and get as far away from this campus as humanly possible. Academic Quality—For my undergraduate degree I went to a top public university. I'm not an Ivy League graduate, but I felt like one at HPU. HPU likes to brag that 1/3 of the student body is international. Wow impressive right? Not. These aren't the international students that majored in engineering and mathmatics at your undergraduate school. HPU will accept any international student even if they barely speak English. Seriously. Get ready to have students that barely speak English in your graduate classes that you will have to work with on projects. Guess who gets to write the big research paper for the group? Well, it won't be the person without a firm grasp of the English language, so that kinda narrows it down a bit. What about the actual classes? They are a joke. The curriculum is a joke. The teachers are a joke. If there were a graduate level community college, this would be it. Basically, I learned nothing from my graduate studies here. I got my current job using my undergraduate degree and previous work experience. Atmosphere—As other people have stated, the pictures HPU shows are mostly from the Windward campus. Some of them aren't from any campus. And none of them are from the campus you will most likely attend: the DOWNTOWN campus. If they did show pictures of this campus, this is what it would entail: 1)homeless people on drugs fighting/arguing with each other. 2)Crazy people yelling at garbage cans. 3)buildings that HPU rents and doesn't own…some of the buildings HPU doesn't even rent the whole building. Basically, the downtown campus isn't really even a campus in the traditional sense of the word…unless you picture a campus set in New Orleans two days after Hurrican Katrina. Campus Security—If you ever need the police while on the downtown campus at night, and you will, you are SOL. The police are all in Waikiki protecting the tourists. Instead you will deal with HPU rent-a-cops who really are an insult to rent-a-cops in other parts of the world. Basically, if the Pope were having a heart attack in front of the HPU security, the security guard would probably 1)shit his pants 2)assume someone else has already called 911 3)if questioned about it later say it never happened or was out of his jurisdiction. These a-holes basic purpose is to tell HPU students they can't sit on the steps in front of the buildings. Technically, they are supposed to make sure only HPU students enter the buildings by checking student IDs, but the first time you see a homeless man in one of your bathrooms during a classroom break you will realize they don't even do that. As far as actually protecting the students, that is a foreign concept to them. |
