University should prepare you for life. Not just professional life but for the daily challenges, ups and downs and bumps in the road that we all experience. It's partly about developing hard skills and intellectual capacity, but just as importantly, should be about nurturing self confidence, communicating clearly and fostering a positive approach to problem solving and problem avoidance. A broad-minded classical education is still the best in my view, but perhaps I'm a little biased. One final piece of advice I can offer is that whatever your major happens to be, try and take a few courses in areas outside your specialty that will stretch you intellectually. They might end up helping you in ways you never anticipated. |
