The mathematics department thrives on either having students drop out or take the same classes over. I believe it is called making certain you have enough teaching positions in the future—students and their true accomplishments are quite secondary. I have seen many mathematics classes start out with 30 or so people—and have eight students in a given class who stayed for a grade. The other 22 or so withdrew; these were all upper division Mathematics classes at Cal State Fullerton. A UCLA study of Public Universities in the United States, covering the entire country, indicated that generally it takes one to two years longer for a Mathematics major to attain their Bachelor's Degree. |
