In-state schools were not on my list of top choices senior year, and when I couldn't afford my out of-of-state schools (NYU and Fordham), I visited MSU, Umich, and Wayne State and decided on MSU because of the flexibility of the university in catering to its students, the welcoming atmosphere (I have not met one snotty and rude person, like I so often encountered when growing up in the Ann Arbor area), and the gorgeous campus that serves as a center for performing artists, animal lovers, world travelers, and scholars. MSU has about 50,000 students, but I never feel lost in a crowd. The university cares about its students. All my classes are relatively small enough to have dicussions (and track your attendance - lots of personal connections with faculty!) with the exception of one lecture class that is probably about 50-80 students. Spartans hold doors open for each other, respect their fellow human beings and their environment (we truly "go green"); they are hard working students. I am grateful to have ended up at MSU. It is a student community and family that my wolverine parents have embraced and admired (seeing as UM was always more of cutthroat place to be). If you want people and faculty who are down to earth and see their lives and learning as part of a greater purpose (and a worldly purpose - we're the #1 public university for study abroad and as a freshman, I studied abroad before my first semester and returned to my first day on campus with a fabulous group of friends and some gen eds fulfilled in Ireland :) ), come to MSU! |
