George Mason is a good school.

That being said, it?s not for everyone. Classes are great and the school does try to accommodate to the students needs however, there certainly is a lack of social life for many. I can?t even begin to count the amount of times I?ve been heckled by Police officers and RA?s about whether I?ve been drinking, where I?ve been and who I?ve been with. It gets really annoying after a while. If you have intentions of partying or enjoy drinking, look into Greek life. While it?s your best option, I?ve been to high school parties that are better than ours and you will have to drive a good ways off campus to get to any of them. If you?re not in Greek life, you will be stuck to drink in the dorms. Wait, you can?t do that either because RA?s here will write you up the minute you do so.

Aside from drinking, Mason falls short in many other social areas. While the campus feels like Wallstreet during the week, it?s virtually dead during the weekends. The age-old complaint that Mason is a commuter school still does apply. The overall friendliness on a day-to-day basis depends on the person, but many people solely look out for themselves and have a detailed agenda to abide by throughout the day, so life seems very rushed and chaotic.

The overall atmosphere of the campus is not all the great and seems to be lacking something. A friend of mine stated that, ?Unless you go here, you will never know what that atmosphere is like and why it?s so depressing.? From the outside, Mason will be viewed as a great school. Yes, it?s a great up and coming school. Yes, it?s financially a good decision. Yes, work is constantly being done to improve the school. But, from some student?s perspectives, the atmosphere here at Mason is quite honestly depressing. It?s also a very exclusive school. The town around it isn?t much better either. It?s mostly suburban neighborhoods and you can get to nothing if you don?t own a car. Mason will tell you that D.C is extremely accessible, but you have to catch bus to bus to metro just to get into the city. In total, it?s nearly an hour commute. And if you do have a car, good luck with Northern Virginia traffic.

The school accredits themselves with their diversity. That?s great, everywhere should be diverse. By this day and age, it shouldn?t matter what ethnicity you are, we should all be treated the same. And, while many ethnicities do attend this school, many ethnic groups tend to stay together. What?s the point of claiming how diverse your school is if cliques are formed from where you come from? The majority of the clubs here on campus also promote this. I haven?t been able to join many of the clubs because I?m not the right ethnicity.

After this very negative rant, I will still say Mason is a good school for some. Most of the problems derive from the social scene. There are many who love it here and have no problem finding a social group. But it?s very hard for others. I would suggest really looking into these aspects of the school. If none of these issues matter to you, I would encourage you to go here. But do take into account what people say about the school. The people who are happy here find great joy in the school, but the people who don?t have probably around transferred out or won?t tell you until you are already there.
