Arizona State University prides itself on a program it calls the Innovation Challenge. The Challenge is promoted as a competition for students who have ideas for 21st century businesses. It is a rigorous competition requiring a grant application and a live "pitch" to a board of people from area businesses. If the student does a good job, he or she can win up to $10,000.00 to further his business plan. The problem is ASU delays payment of the winnings for sometimes longer than a year. By that time, many of the "winners" have moved on or dropped out - or their initiatives fail for lack of funding. I know this because I mentored a project for the Challenge in 2013 and a good percentage of the funding still hasn't been paid - despite emails, phone calls, visits and even a message to the University Provost. They refuse to respond and refuse to pay. So beware the ASU Innovation Challenge and beware ASU! |
