I attended UNO for my first semester, then transferred for a variety for a variety of reasons. Sometimes I wish I'd stayed. At the time I thought I wanted to go to a very prestigious, northern university—where I am now, about to graduate. In retrospect, UNO was every bit as good academically as where I am now. The faculty and course offerings were excellent. The location was quiet and safe, but you could take buses straight from campus downtown or to the French Quarter (a plus for me since I didn't/don't own a car). There was a lot of diversity on campus and people were generally open minded, important since I'm gay but also good for the lack of racism or ageism against other students. I was going through a hard time being away from home, so wasn't entirely happy at UNO for personal reasons. But it was a very good school, at a very affordable price (I didn't realize what a bargain it was at the time). There were plenty of interesting students. Lake Pontchartrain was beautiful and sometimes I would just sit and listen to music on my heardphones and watch the waves when I wanted to chill out. The workers in the cafeteria were friendly. The NO Art Museum is very good and underrated. There's so many things to do in NO, it's a magical place. And UNO has a far stronger reputation out of state than people realize. It's very solid. I would give UNO a look for sure. I'm actually considering applying there to graduate school in a year or so, maybe I'll be back again. |
