A lot of people regularly discuss the lack of diversity at Hope College. This is definitely an issue that the college administration should deal with. But with that said, even being a white Christian does not mean you will fit in here. After three years here, I still have no friends that I would call "close". Students tend to groups themselves with their friends from high school, and that is where they remain for the entire four years. It is extremely difficult to make friends here if you do not come here in a pre-prepared clique. There are housing policies geared to enshrine this attitude as part of the Hope experience, and with college housing mandatory for the entire four years, there is no way to avoid this. So I would say, all in all, that it is not enough to be Christian and white to have a positive experience at Hope, but you had best also come here with a group of friends from high school, because you will not make close friends here. |
