I will be transferring out of Iona College. I enrolled because of the proximity to New York City, White Plains, Stamford, CT -metro areas - thinking Iona would have the best Internship program and Career Development facilities - I was so wrong. Iona has a Career Department, but it is so understaffed and the staff are underpaid and can't and don't devote the time students need to assist them with their job and career planning. The President started designing and developing a Strategic Plan, and I attended his town hall meetings, but that all fell apart. Most of the representatives, students, administrators on the committees left Iona, retired, graduated, or are not happy with Iona's current Higher Administrators. A very bad sign is the turnover at Iona so high. My personal feeling, is no-one or very few Administrators really care about the students at Iona. The President's strategic plan lacks implementation, lacks focus, and, therefore, the entire college has no direction. There is very poor communication between departments, staff turn-over so frequently - no-one knows who is responsible for overseeing jobs. So many employees are just not happy working at Iona. Higher level Management and structure is lacking and until this President oversees Iona like a business - the World won't be Moving by Iona. This President is so hands off - you never see him walking around campus, visiting offices, and seeing for himself what is and isn't been done effectively, under his watch, on his campus. He doesn't even know the name of long term staff and faculty members at Iona - there is such a lack of a community atmosphere at Iona. When employees' morale, motivation, and salaries are low, with very limited incentives, is low, student services suffer, and students are not treated as the number 1 priority. If Iona wants to Move the World, the staff, and administrators need to also start Moving Iona, or else a degree from Iona will be totally worthless, as it is, Iona is ranked so low on the list(s) for Return on Investment (ROI). For the last two years, I read the Mission, walk around and see faculty, administrators always in meetings, but nothing changed, everything is status quo - no positive action has taken place. The Strategic Plan is just Goal I, Objective II -just words, not action, and at the end of the day -without action, nothing can change, and nothing has been moved or will be moved until effective business practices are put into place. A new dorm was put up, and real estate is being purchased, but how is that helping students get internships and jobs. I didn't enroll at Iona College to just see dorms being erected.I am leaving Iona College - I'm sad to leave my friends, but I'm happy to be enrolling at a College that will give me more value for my money, and that offers very needed job planning services, and a much better ROI |
