UTA is a commuter school with a high attrition rate. The school itself reflects this highly. Non-major specific classes are crowded and usually taught by indifferent professors. Trudging in through the parking lots every morning with hordes of other students gets to be a depressing experience. Many professors teach in a manner that reflects their absolute indifference to being physically present. They teach because they are there, not because they want to be. Many lectures feel directed towards the walls of the room in spite of students being present, they are doing this because they have too and it shows.

The math department is unbearable. Professors come in and out like a revolving door. Never plan on taking math courses with a professor more than once. I cannot emphasize how bad this department and many of the people they hire are. Passable English or teaching experience are not requirements, sifting through departmental bureaucracy is astonishingly even harder then the typical bureaucratic mess. Avoid this department at all cost. Transfer credit from anywhere as an alternative, be it community college or another university.

Chemistry department (my major) is good as a whole. Research is pretty much a requirement in order to retain interest. I don't see how anyone could get through otherwise as the classes would kill anyone's interest in the subject. Many professors are relatively helpful and flexible, some are even really good actually. Advising for this department is also very clear and flexible.

The school is in OK shape, but as a whole everything feels very disinterested and detached. Everyone is there to achieve an end ie: a degree. The process is sterile and uncomfortable, which is unfortunate because getting an education is about the process, not the diploma at the end.

In summation, you get what you pay for. This school isn't 30k a semester so one shouldn't expect the type of experience that would be expected of a high end private university. What you get here depends on what you can salvage from it. You can get a decent education, although maybe not as rewarding as you would like. People going here should temper their expectations with a very healthy dose of reality. It's a university, but a lower end one.
