I chose UVM because my family took ski vacations in the area for years, and I loved it. They also gave me a great financial aid package, but that's how they suck you in…they chip away at it every year, and you end up paying close to full sticker price in senior year (which is a LOT). Don't bother with the Honors College - the only benefit is nice dorms, but you pay extra for them as well. The information on Princeton review about "average loans" is false - I don't know anyone who escaped UVM with less than $60,000 in student loans. The campus is gorgeous and the students are friendly - those are about the best things I can say about the school. Many classes are taught by TAs who have little idea what they are doing, and the professors are often inaccessible. I had to take a class required for my major three times because the first two professors didn't speak English, so I had to drop the course twice. Student Health is also a joke - if you have an ongoing medical condition, find a real doctor in Burlington and go there. The food is not horrible, but not great. There is plenty of social life if you are interested - lots to do on and off campus. Most people move off campus in junior year, and the apartments in Burlington are expensive and in horrible condition. The landlords don't want to maintain them because they rent to students who trash them. You can find an internship if you look, but most are unpaid. Bottom line: UVM is a decent place to go if you are an in-state student, but way too expensive for a mediocre education for an out-of-state student. I should have gone to my own state university (UNH).
