At Reed you never see your grades although you do receive them. This way you are not in competion with other students. Instead of seeing your grades you will receive extensive notes from your prof and sometimes you will even have meetings with your prof about papers you have written to discuss how you did and where you could have gone further or improved. I like this approach because it was my experience in high school that if I wrote a paper for a teacher and I thought it was a peice of crap and he or she gave me an A anyways I would always just perform at that minimum level. At Reed even when you do get an A on a paper you always get feedback on how you could have done better. This encourages you to always improve yourself and creates an environment were people are interested in what they are learning not just how they can get an A.
