Though I graduated almost 20 years ago, I felt I had to comment on my experiences. My only true regret in life, from an academic and life experience standpoint, was to attend U of M (then known as Memphis State), my hometown university. (I now firmly believe one should leave home for college to get the best chance to fully take advantage of college life and the opportunities for personal growth available.) I must admit I didn't try very hard in college, thereby making the situation more difficult, but I was relatively involved in the university and can speak to the overall experience. I found U of M to be a generic, cold and overall fair to poor university where many of the students were not prepared for college and where students were nothing more than a number. I would be heartbroken if my daughter chose to limit her opportunities to the point of attending what locals refered to as "Tiger High". (The tiger is U of M's mascot.) Perhaps things have improved in overall quality, but my sense is that a few new buildings are not enough to make the university any better than it was when I was there. In addition, in my view, Memphis would not be a very nice or fun city for many college students. The area around the university has some security issues and the city itself is located in an area with no mountains, no usable water for recreation, and very little charm.
