Mercyhurst University

When I came to tour Mercyhurst College, I hardly expected that I'd end up attending Mercyhurst. However, I was very impressed with the asthetics of the campus and also with the friendly professionalism that the students and faculty maintained.

Mercyhurst is a very relaxed atmosphere. It's basically the average people in high school, only in a college environment. There are very few cliques and the students are really friendly. I was surprised with how many majors Mercyhurst had to offer. It is nice that I can attend a smaller college but the college still has plenty of majors to choose from.

There are alot of extra curricular clubs and orginizations to get involved with at Mercyhurst. However, you are responsible for getting out and joining these clubs. They are not going to come and recruit you.

I think what I like best about Mercyhust is the individual attention that they give each student. The professors always list their office hours on the syllabus for the class and they strongly encourage students to stop by even if it's just to talk about life in general. When I came to a freshman orientation day at Mercyhust the faculty really stressed that Mercyhurst will probably never be considered an Ivy League school because Ivy League schools are distinguished by the amount of research they encourage their faculty to participate in. At Mercyhurst, the faculty are encouraged to participate in research, but the school places the main focus on the education of their undergraduate students.

Of course, Mercyhurst is not perfect. A lot of people go drinking on Friday nights (it happens at every school). People complain about there not being enough activities on the weekends.

We do have a Student Activities Committee which orginizes trips and activities for Fridays and Saturdays in order to encourage students not to drink. There are plenty of activities for students to participate in (my favorite being the movies that are shown every Wednesday in the Performing Arts Center) but students have to really seek these activities out. Again, college students are adults and they are responsible for finding things to do instead of drinking.

So there's my overview of Mercyhurst. It's really a nice school to attend and I am glad for my choice!
