Southeast is VERY close-minded and part of the good ‘old boy system. Just check out the development of the River Campus and all the deals made under the table with that situation if you don’t believe me. Southeast likes to talk the talk but not walk the walk. As far as Historic Preservation goes, they like to talk about their
nationally recognized
undergraduate program, but every year they tear down more and more local historic buildings in pursuit of a larger campus (which of course translates into higher tuition).

Here’s something Southeast never taught me (and boy, I wish they had!): learn how to REALLY search out and apply for jobs. I'm not just talking about those that are posted on the usual field-specific job sites, but the ones where you have to actively seek out an interview. It's a competitive world out there and I'm sorry to say that a degree from Southeast doesn't do much to help you out. I'm pretty sure that my spelling and grammar actually got worse after attending Southeast. My first job after graduation was on the east coast and I felt like such a country bumpkin with virtually no real skills compared to my peers who had the same degree!

Also, don't believe everything the professors tell you. Remember, they, too, have agendas. Sometimes it’s political, sometimes it is research-motivated and sometimes it’s personal. A lot of them have been in the academic world for a long, long time and have no idea what it takes to make it on the ‘outside.’ I actually had a professor tell me a five-page resume was a good length for a recent graduate. I'd like you to try submitting that kind of resume for any job and see if it doesn't end up straight in the trash. Nobody has time to read all that crap when the next potential hire has a nice, concise 1-page resume AND they went to a well-recognized university with good credentials.

On a personal note, I had a very unpleasant experience with the University and their response to students in a crisis. Their way of dealing with these types of students is dump ‘em and run. Unless you really have no other option, your money is better spent on another school where they treat the students better and offer a higher-quality education.
