First of all, this is a community college, so do not expect any real college type of life here. There is a dorm on campus, but most students are commuter. There is also a bar that is practically on campus, so if you are of age, then there you go. However, there are many activities and fests that happen throughout the year.

The Pros:

  • This school has a really good science department, the AMBO program (Applied Marine Biology, Oceanography) is top notch and in some cases better then what you will find at (some) four-year universities. The medical related programs as well as the criminal justice and fire technology programs are top notch as well.
  • The campus is located at the tip of South Portland on Casco Bay. On one side you have Willard Beach to lounge around or swim (when the weather is right) and on the other you have a dike that leads out to a lighthouse. Plenty of places (benches, grass, beach) to sit and watch the ships go by (or dream about sailing). There is a pretty cool view of Portland from here, as well. SMCC was built on what used to be Fort Preble, and some of the old fortifications are still there, which is kind of neat.
  • Students have access to the gym.
  • There is a baseball team, soccer team, and a basketball team to support or join. Some students even go as far as painting their faces school colors for the games. So there is some sense of school pride.
  • The cafeteria is buffet style and rather cheap for all-you-can-eat.
  • The Cons:

  • For too many, SMCC seems to be a continuation of high school, which is rather annoying.
  • You get charged for a parking permit even if you do not have a vehicle unless you waive it. Then, once you get the permit, you have to prove that the vehicle is registered in your name.
  • You automatically get charged for student health insurance unless you can prove that you get insurance from another provider. And, if you do not waive it, you get charged anyways. For the Fall and Spring semesters it will run you about $600.
  • The student health insurance is a joke.
