NC is a school for mavericks. It attracts people who don't tend to follow the traditional path. A lot of the kids like to be weird for the sake of being weird. But they're really into learning for its own sake, they value social justice highly, they're accepting of idiosyncrasy, and their sense of community is very powerful. Those were the things that attracted me, the type A personality HS valedictorian, to a school like that. I was miserable after four years of competing with other people just for grades. At NC, you only compete with yourself.

Basically, NC is more about the journey than the destination. You go there because you want to get an education, not because you want to get a bachelor's degree to use as a launchpad for your next degree. That's about the best way I can put it. If you're more the kind of person who wants to play it safe (which is perfectly understandable if you're pre-professional), you probably shouldn't go there.

If you can, you should go visit the school and see what you think for yourself. NC definitely isn't for everyone, and you won't be able to figure out whether it's for you by reading some of these silly reviews or asking random strangers on the internet.
