I enrolled at Central Virginia Community College straight out of high school in 2004. I have been going there off and on for about 6 years and finally graduated this May. (Yes, I know that is a long time but my life has been a little hectic).

I think that CVCC is a good school for the money, even though the financial aid department can be a pain sometimes, Amherst needs new carpets, and some of the professors are primadonnas. That being said, there are many people there who care about their students and are VERY good professors or staff.
Lynchburg is a small city so it is easy to make friends if you want to do so. The downside of the city's small size is that there is not that much to do there. The student body is somewhat diverse.

Many people complain about the hardness or easiness of the classes. I found the classes to be appropriately challenging if you follow directions and study reasonably hard. Please, if you are taking any classes there make sure you take the appropriate prerequisite classes (your 101 classes).
I think it is sometimes helpful to see an advisor, but you need to do your homework before you come. It is usually helpful to know what classes you are taking and where you want to go to college if transfering.
