I am from New York, and I knew that PSU (State College) would be rural, but I didn't know that it would be THIS rural. There are literally cows and tractors on campus (near the law school and Beaver Stadium). Also, when I visited, I heard people reference "downtown," so I assumed that there was a town, and it was up Atherton Street, on the other side of the hill. It turns out that there is no town and the only thing on the other side of the hill is a bank, 3 grocery stores, a Target, a Wal-Mart, a Denny's, a Eat N' Park, an Applebee?s, a Ruby Tuesdays, a Red Lobster, a couple gas stations, and a trailer park.

Also, PSU academics are very, very overrated. It is almost the definition of a degree factory. The school is only rated well because PSU students have low standards. PSU strives for mediocrity and it achieves its goal with astonishing success. PSU/PSU students write-off PSU's academic short-comings as being ok, because it is a public school. Apparently, there is a prevailing theory that somehow my future employer is going to excuse my deficiencies because I didn't go to a private college.

PSU's admin staff is comparable to the DMV.

Finally, PSU is very, very homogeneous. PSU is something like 83% white and almost all of those kids are from the suburbs and the overwhelming majority are from PA (as can be expected from a state school). There are occasional strong undertones of racism amongst the student body. For instance, last year the school radio had an advertisement that compared then President Graham Spanier to Adolf Hitler (in a good way). I have also witnesses several anti-Catholic outbursts, but if I start naming every racist thing that I've witnesses, this message will get very long very fast, so you will just have to take my word for it.

In short, if you like rural environments, want a job where "close enough" is good enough, have had good experiences at the DMV, are white, from the suburbs, and are mildly racist, then PSU is great for you. Otherwise, you may want to look at another school.

P.S. If you are into sports, the basketball team is very, very bad, the football team is average, the wrestling team is very good, and the lax team is horrible.
