I'm double majoring in Adolescent Education and English currently at Houghton. Previously I was in the business department but realized my interests lay elsewhere. It saddens me to see so many negative reviews of Houghton.Houghton is in a small area, so if you like the hustle and bustle of a college town you really won't get it here. That doesn't mean that the campus is completely dead, it just means that you find different ways to enjoy yourself here. Clubs, friend groups, activities, its all very enjoyable if you let yourself love it.I love that it's a Christian community-although many seem to hate that, but if you are coming here be prepared that it is a Christian college and so professors and students love exploring it in every department. I find that wonderful to see how my faith can be tied into different things. I love just about everything with Houghton, the faculty and administration have been fantastic with dealing with situations on campus that I needed help with. I've had overwhelming support come from every department and it's amazing. I've met people from many different backgrounds and beliefs here. I have a wide range of friends who are extremely conservative to extremely liberal. You'll find your group if you come here. The one bad thing I will say about Houghton is that because it is small drama and gossip spread like wildfire. Especially now, with new apps such as yik yak it's very easy for students to be targeted and there is nothing faculty can do to stop it. All in all I love Houghton, it has it's problems, but slowly it has been getting better and more accepting of everyone. If you're wondering what campus would be like and to get a feel for the different types of students you will meet I would suggest reading into the Houghton Star. There seems to be a lot of differing viewpoints.
