I'm a freshman here and I'm about to start my second half of the year. Let me just me straight forward…this was not my first choice, or second…not even third choice. My top school denied me, second (Hofstra) wait-listed me. Okay, so I was excited to go to SHU, I'm originally from NYC, I've been living in CT for about 4 years. I was upset that I couldn't go back to my home state. But I swallowed my anger and just went anyway. It started off nicely. I never actually went on a tour or interview, they just accepted me after 2 weeks I applied that I thought was weird. The orientation was a lot of fun, I thought that SHU just might be the university for me. What I did notice was that EVERYONE was nice. It was a bit alarming. After I started classes, things started to sail nicely, I was pulling in B's, I was making friends. My roommates were cool (i was in a triple). Towards October was when things started to spiral out of control. The dorms are horrible, unsanitary and un-kept. Look, I'm not trying to come off as a snot or anything but the conditions were just UNACCEPTABLE. I'm a minority, I'm Black. There's not a lot of me there. Let me be honest. Which is FINE, it was like that for the most of my life. However, here, the girls are so rude and stuck up. They gave me very weird and uncomfortable looks for the most part. The dudes are cool. A lot of partying on Thursday nights, drinking, running in the halls making noise. The campus is so tiny and there's nothing to do in the surrounding town. I got bored VERY fast. I was already upset that I wasn't in the school I wanted to be and I was trying to make it work…but I ended up having a very horrible experience at SHU slowly as the days went on. My roommate turned out to be very ignorant (the other one left) and rude and close minded. We argued a lot. I found myself going home EVERY weekend. Towards the end of the semester, I had breakdowns and would go home DURING the week. (I'm about 25-30 mins away). This was not the college experience I was expecting to have. I tried so hard to make it decent by making friends, focusing on my school work. But slowly my overall experience went south out of no where. I was barely on campus, my grades slipped, I was crying all the time. I was not happy. The academics are great but I feel like I can find academics like this at another university that will also have a more nice environment and better people and a better atmosphere. In the end, I pulled out of campus life, there's no way I'm paying close to 50k a year for me to get that constant negative experience. I'm living at home, I got a car (Thank you mom and dad) and I will commute until the year is over. once the year is over i'm GONE. SHU isn't for everyone. However, I DONT regret my decision on attending SHU, I needed this kind of breakdown to realize that not everyone is going to be nice to me and not everything is going to go my way. This was quite a negative experience but I learned so much from it.

commentOf course the area is going to be boring to you, you lived in NYC, the city that never sleeps. It's hard for anywhere to compete with that. I live in a rural town where we have farms and you have to incorporate tractors into your daily commute to get to places on time. They will be right in front of you forcing you to go 5 mph on a 45 mph road. Therefore, for someone like me the area can still be somewhat exciting since it is better than cow tipping which seems to be the favorite pass time of the youth in my town.
