Greenville College

Frankly, the school when rated as a school is terrible. Students aren't interested in academic/scholarly work-and the quality of work could be considered average for high school, not college. Also, regarding the food, be prepared to suffer. Common joke in the bathrooms: "ah man, gotta love that DC food." Your only hope is to get a dorm with a kitchen (most girls dorms have kitchens). Also, the food is overpriced.

Students are generally immature without supervision. The student union was 24/7 a few weeks ago, and is not anymore due to people trashing the place, breaking things, and theft.

Racism and homophobia are rampant on campus and in the community. Censorship is a big thing. Free exploration of ideas is frowned upon when that exploration leads you to considering things not accepted by the admin. Most problems on campus stem from the admin, who is subservient to the board, and the board is filled with rich conservatives who have even protested things such as class trips for one of the required courses to various religious communities in Chicago, such as Mosques and a Buddhist temple (thus the trip is now two days in St. Louis with only one Mosque and one Jewish community). I could say more, but I expect a character limit so I'll end with this: you can do better. There are far better schools out there. Even the community college I went to before this was better.

If you want to go to college at church camp, Greenville is for you!
Word of warning, they will beat around the bush when it comes to the 'lifestyle statement' until you are already enrolled, so I will explain it before you get any further.

The lifestyle statement is a rule guide that every student has to sign. It indicates that you will restrain from drinking alcohol, having sex, gambling, and smoking while you attend Greenville College. If you break any of these rules AND GET CAUGHT you will be put on probation, excluded from sport teams, etc.

Although these things definitely still take place on and around campus, they are hard to conceal, and you never know who will rat you out. Some students are very close-minded and do not agree with any kind of secular activities.

Aside from the freedom restricting rules, Greenville's housing staff makes it nearly impossible for you to live off campus. You will pay three fold what you would for an apartment to live in a dorm all four years. They do not consider financial needs, and only approve off-campus living if you live with your parent/guardian within 30 miles of the school (or if you are married).

Once you are in, it is extremely inconvenient to get out. Credits here transfer only as electives so you will have to take extra classes wherever you transfer. Most classes for your major will be worth while but a majority of the other classes (Common core, electives, general ed requirements) are full of busywork and will waste your time.

The Greenville area has a few opportunities for fun if you are creative. There is a bowling alley, and a few bodies of water where you can go fishing. Lake Carlyle is only 15 minutes away and has a nice beach area. There is one overpriced grocery store (IGA) and a Dollar General. If you want anything beyond that you will have to drive 20 miles to the nearest Walmart or 50 miles to the nearest mall. Food options are limited. There is an excellent burger place (Kahunas) and an even better pizza place (Joe's) but otherwise you will have to eat fast food (McDonald's, KFC, Taco Bell, Subway, Dairy Queen) or Mexican/ Chinese food.

The college is currently transforming into a University and refuses to spend any more money than is absolutely necessary. That being said, tuition gets raised almost every year to make up for the money they refuse to spend, and campus maintenance is lacking. There is one maintenance crew consisting of 5-6 men who are expected to fix every house/dorm on campus. Most of the campus houses are falling apart or are holding more people than they should. (This year I shared a 6 bedroom house with 17 girls and two single bathrooms).

Play your cards right and you could graduate in 3.5 years instead of 4 to save some money. But you will have to do an internship (and pay for credit hours) if you want to get out early. The professors in the business school are great, but I cannot speak for the other departments. You will find friends here whether you are into video gaming, sports, music, or just have an interest in breaking the rules. There are 'all kinds of kinds' here at Greenville. My advice however, is to avoid attending this school unless you are a music or ministry major with a hefty trust fund.

3rd Year Female -- Class 2016

Faculty Accessibility: A, Surrounding City: F

The main points about Greenville College one should realize before committing.
I am a transfer senior in the Music Business department and I really like how stuff is taught and how the faculty in the department treats you.

But that is all that I can say in credit to the school.
-They treat students like children and will not let you off campus or be off the meal plan save for a few reasons (Married, at home with parents, being 25+ etc...) It is very upsetting especially when you have lived completely on your own and have been independent from your parents. No matter what they say about community, it is not the main reason that they want you to live on campus and be on the meal plan.

-I went here for two reasons. (1) Music Business (2) A Christian School
Let me warn you that this school will only magnify the fact that Christians are sinful and in need of a savior as everyone else. The vibe that I get from the school is that Methodism is the only way students are allowed to live.

-They rarely make exceptions for students not taking part in their community or living standards.
-A good majority of the staff is incredibly close minded and seem to feel that the only power they have is to control everyone and treat them like they are in high school.

It is hard to transfer credits out
It is hard to get out of anything in the student handbook
They will try to gouge you where they can in spite of how much they say Alumni contribute to the school

It is boring as HELL here on weekends.
They can't always force you to do what they want but they will make it as hard as possible to do anything else.

IF you want a controlled, simple, and "one path" Christian education, you might like it.Otherwise, FROM A GUY WHO HAS BEEN TO 4 SCHOOLS, look somewhere else. I wish I had
