LSU has the true college experience for anyone who is willing to put himself out there. Upon arriving, you will hear "get involved!" over and over. It's good advice! I've found a great place at the LSU Wesley Foundation (the Methodist Campus Ministry) and Sigma Alpha Iota, a music fraternity for women. Both Religious and Greek organizations of all types are abundant here. As for beyond extra curricular activities - the actual coursework you do - I'm sure it's somewhat dependent upon which field you go into. As a very self-motivated student, I found my freshman year in the School of Music to be easier than high school, but I know plenty of other freshmen that had to work extremely hard. Sophomore year is definitely proving to be much more challenging for me though. It's bearable and even enjoyable because I really love my professors. LSU School of Music boasts its music faculty for a good reason. Do be forewarned that the University still has its quirks. As a student living in the dorms and without a car, getting meals can sometimes be frustrating seeing as how the dining halls are only open M-F, 7am-7pm. The Union is open on weekends, but its hours may depend on how the workers feel that day (beside the fact that the food gets old fast). There's a lot of construction going on, but it's really awesome when you get to see something completed and use it! And finally, the campus safety is somewhat questionable. The university does make efforts to maintain a safe environment, but it's difficult with LSU's location and major road (highland) running right through campus. If you're smart about safety though, it shouldn't be a problem. Generally, LSU is a great place to be to get a reasonably priced education, have a good time, meet a variety of people, experience a unique culture (with great food!), and have a fantastic time. | Bright | Many people go into LSU with half of their graduating class beside them, so for someone out of state, like me its a little intimidating at first. People either never leave their high school clique or they make entirely new friends. For the most part everyone is friendly and welcoming, even if you're the only one who doesn't get some old inside joke. | Education Quality: A, Faculty Accessibility: F

LSU is truly in a league of its own.
It's fantastic to walk around a school that truly takes pride in itself-- we really BLEED purple and gold.
As for the mass communication department, it is absolutely fantastic. The professors are knowledgeable and most are retired or still working in the industry. There are tons of opportunities to get involved and doing so really helps out by both giving you experience and letting you get to know instructors on a really personal level.
There is a service for practically anything you need-- disability, career, greek, traffic, etc.. And if you have a problem with something, going through the chain of command really pays off. Surprisingly, its really easy to make a difference here on campus, it just takes a little initiative.
And there is an organization for everyone! It's really important to get involved because its such a big campus, but doing so allows you to truly make it smaller.. We have roughly 30,000 and I see someone I know every time I step onto campus.
Football season is crazy! People set up their tailgates days in advance and on gameday you can hardly walk.. Yes, its crowded, but the atmosphere is so amazing you don't even notice. Long story short, its a great school, and pretty easy to fall into. Baton Rouge is not bad either-- you use pretty much only 4 streets and they're all really close, so you don't use much gas. There are quite a few bars and you can get into pretty much all of them by the time you're 19. If you're only 18, don't worry, there are 3 or 4 you can get into and most of them aren't so bad. | Education Quality: A+, Perceived Campus Safety: C

LSU, while it may have not been the best choice for me, was a fabulous university. The school is beautiful. The faculty of your specific department is helpful. Students are very friendly and open minded. There are tons of clubs that have tables in Free Speech Alley where students are encouraged to speak there mind and band together. The university even has free on site tutoring for math, physics, and sciences in addition to office hours.
A major complaint of current and former students is that they do not prepare you with connections for a job. That is untrue. There are 2 career fairs per semester that hire for all majors. I have a very specialized degree (Math - Actuarial Sciences) and I was able to find a job within 3 months of graduation. My job even uses my degree. People who have a hard time finding a job post graduation are typically uninformed due to their own faults. If they would spend less time hitting the bottle and more time talking to a professor or career services, then they would have a job too.
Assert yourself! That is the only way to put your mind and your degree to use. Jobs do not fall in your lap. you have to go looking for them. Networking is also very important. Being in a fraternity or sorority is helpful, but not required. Greeks are friendly people. I was an independent and had many Greek friends. Everyone is friendly and you don't need to join fraternities or sororities to have friends or go to those parties. There is generally a party anywhere and anytime and anyone is welcome to join. | Education Quality: A+, Perceived Campus Safety: C-
