Becker College

I am a student that is attending Becker's Game Design program and after almost 2 semesters here, its well worth it for me. Note how I said - ME. Not everyone will like Becker but from what I can tell, I like it and my friends tend to like it as well.

First off - the schools education is very subpar when compared to other schools. I transferred from a community college so I skipped out on all the gen-eds yet when I look at them, it involves the type of work that I had in middle school. The problem revolves around most of the students though, as from what I can tell there are quite a profound amount of idiots (not all to say the least!) that make me question how they got into a college.

This all depends on the major you pick though. In game design - we tend to stand out and tend to be smarter (though not all of course!) when compared to sports management. The people that would feel comfortable are usually people in Game Design, Forensics, and vet tech. The women in the nursing program are as well yet only the ones that actually are IN it rather than trying to get into it.

On another note - the social life at Becker tends to be rather dull on the weekends. This is because of a multitude of reasons stemming from people who have to work (raises hand) to those who are just not liking Becker (a bunch). The dry campus policy is easily broken but not anywhere on level with Holy Cross. If you want parties than you shouldn't be in college wasting their parents money and doing so at Becker to say the least.

The cost of Becker isn't a very steep one in my honest opinion, but it is when you take in to consideration the cheap dorms that are definitely overpriced and food that is on varying suckage levels...still I come from a home which doesn't need to have loans so I am luckier than the average student.

FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE GOING INTO GAME DESIGN:

The program is simple, classes aren't hard - but you have to have a fire under your ass in order to make it. The industry is competetive and not as luxurious as you may think. HOWEVER - if you want to make it you can easily get it when you are here at Becker. You just have to put in the extra hours into what you love (level design, modelling, animating, concept art, programming, etc.). From what I can tell its about 90% students that are just playing games and trashing on the program rather than working their tail off to get into the industry and do well. The Weller lab is open since we get key fobs to it. I spend nights there till about 4AM sometimes with people working on homework or just practicing. The thing about the major is that it is progressively more harder to get into it as it is very reputable now. It will only become better with our new design building and MASSDiGi hooking us up. I hope they actually get the portfolio thing going since there are only about 3 people that actually can use a pencil and make art (not anime)....if you are good at art PLEASE come here. We need more artists!!Basically - if you are going into any of the said majors, remember its what you put in that you get out. Those ones tend to be better, but if you aren't there are way better alternatives than Becker.
