Lansing Community College

I had contacted this school way back in early October about taking a course in fashion during the spring semester. I was referred to contact a lady named Christine and given a phone number which appeared to be her cell phone number and left no less than six phone messages asking that she contact me as I desired to take a course and obtain information about courses and never received a return call. I later contacted admissions on several occasions and they also tried to contact the fashion dept. but nobody ever answered the phone. What amazes me most is that I had less trouble getting into Harvard University than trying to get the courtesy of a return call. For literally three months I could not get hold of anyone who could assist me. Finally I contacted the president's office and felt my issue was just dismissed. This is one of the most poorly ran and managed academic institutions I have ever seen in my 50 years of life.

1st Year Male -- Class 2005

I was so very close to finishing my degree at LCC (general associate's), but I have decided after a three-year long break that I will be transferring elsewhere. Let me give you a better understanding of my awful experiences with this school:

In 2009, I took a cooking class led by Chef Nicklosovich.
He was a good instructor, but he had trouble behaving himself around his female students. Dirty jokes were the norm, and there were even stories passed around about him casually dating students. This wouldn't normally bother me, but I did find out that he was married. I also learned that the school actually KNOWS about his unprofessional behavior. I had a meeting with the Dean, who told me that the school was requiring him to take etiquette courses in order to keep his employment. As far as I know, he is still teaching there. That was strike one for LCC.

I come from a low-income family, so I had been receiving financial aid to attend LCC from the very beginning. My parent's income was so meager one year that my dad ended up having to pull money from his retirement savings to pay the bills. When I was applying for financial aid the following semester, the school did not allow my usual grant because they counted that retirement money as income; I was too "rich" to qualify, although we were living on poverty level income! I tried to appeal it, but the staff had me jumping through so many hoops. One staff member gave me incorrect information which caused me to make two fruitless trips to Lansing from my home in Pinckney. I finally gave up. My grandparents ended up paying for that semester. Strike two!

Months later, an opportunity for an internship was dropped into my lap. The internship is known as the Disney College Program. The Walt Disney Co. hires in college students for short periods of time (5 to 6 months with the option to extend) and also offer Department of Education accredited courses that are guaranteed to transfer to almost any university. I wanted to participate, so I consulted an LCC counselor to see if the school would even accept the credits if I went. The counselor responded "I have never heard of this sort of thing..." and promised she would get back with me. Days passed, and not a single peep from LCC. I called the office and left a message for the counselor. A week passed, and still NOTHING. Time was running out; I was going to miss the application deadline for Disney. After one more call to LCC that went absolutely nowhere, I applied with Disney and was accepted at the last minute. At that point, LCC had hit strike three; I was done! I went to Florida and worked/schooled at Disney World and had one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

Four years have passed since my last course at LCC. I have
done other internships, embarked on amazing journeys, and currently hold some pretty cool jobs. I would like to go back to school, though, and soon.My only hope is that LCC won't do something ridiculous, like wipe my education history or make it impossible for my earned credits to transfer to a better school.
