Understand right at the start that I went there in "the bad old days" of the late 1970's. Alice Lloyd College, or as I refer to it—All is Lurid College—was a base, useless appendage on the educational body of the state of Kentucky. It was a bloodsucker, led by two of the biggest bloodsuckers Will Hayes and "Miss June". All the smarmy propaganda that the college puts out today to try to whitewash that era still won't remove the stain. Instead, the college should acknowledge what a pit it was then and make a vow that it will never slip back to that level again.

Point by point, let me state my case:

#1. The college was living off its reputation from having been a part of the Ralph Edwards show in the 50's. But we students didn't give a rat's a## about Ralph Edwards. For the most part we came for an education, with the exception noted below.

#2. Because there was absolutely NO social life on campus, those of us who had to endure long weekends filled with boredom wound up crawling into a bottle or worse. Since the college was accepting anyone who could write their name, there were some dregs who shouldn't have been there and did nothing but become the focal point for all types of activities, none of which were wholesome and some of which were not legal in ANY state. Not saying I was not a willing participant in the alcohol and drugs so rampant on the campus—I was—but there were others who drank and smoked because there was nothing else to do.

#3. The faculty was basically at that time whoever they could get on the payroll. Some \"professors\" were almost embarrassed to be called that because there weren't a handful who held doctorates at the time.

#4. As a result of the above, there were classes there that were "taught" by people who were barely conversant with the textbook, the theories in it, etc. I had better teachers in my freshman year of high school than at ALC.

#5. Will Hayes had a reputation. Let's just say his binoculars weren't only for bird-watching. There were others, too. It is a wonder they didn't formally create a club for voyeurs. There were already many members.

#6. The president and "Miss June"'s role seemed to be nothing more than get more money for the school's coffers. But they were having difficulty because the college was absolutely rudderless. When there is such a gap between what the vision of the college is supposed to be and the reality, whole institutions can fall into the gap, never to be heard from again. And the reality at the time was a lack of leadership, a lack of commitment to its core values (particularly the education of Appalachian students), and a loss of direction overall.

In all honesty, the school is probably better now than it was. I guess it has to be…it couldn't have been worse. I just want to say that anyone considering ALC should make a personal visit there. Go when classes are in session…go on a Sunday morning as well. If the classes are up to par, then also understand what true isolation is. When those hills start to close in on you and you are a long way from home, diversions, even liquid ones from a bottle, start looking awfully good.

Check the stats of the professors. What is their educational background? How many doctorates are there? Did their degrees come from a real college or the University of PO BOX 2000? From a worthy school or from www.diploma.com?

Does the staff, from the President on down, have an active desire to benefit the students? Or are the donors all that matter? Don't be snookered into thinking the college is "like" another, say a Berea. It isn't. But don't take anyone's word for it until you see for yourself.
