Colby was my "safety school" but I was looking forward to college, thinking that anywhere there would be so many young people together would be a fun time. The academics here are pretty good and I work fairly hard to get mostly A's. However, the social life is TERRIBLE. I can only describe the town of Waterville as a Northern Redneck Outpost, and there is serious hostility from locals towards the mostly prep-school educated, arrogant, rich students. There is no night life unless you enjoy getting black out drunk in a tiny dorm room with 3-4 other people. The local police are out to get Colby students and if you are driving around late at night with an out of state license plate, expect to get pulled over and grilled. Local police have been using plain clothes police officers to shut down any off campus parties, and this year they have succeeded to the point that no one leaves the campus. Now, they are even parking unmarked cars around campus to look for anyone who may be underage and drunk. I can not imagine a less inviting environment for young people. If you are only at school for the academics, I would recommend Colby as it is a small school and you will get individual attention from faculty. However, if you expect to party, don't even think about this school.
