This is all coming from an out of state perspective. I came to Mizzou basically to get away from home, but now I pretty much wish I was closer. (It is a 6 hour drive)The first thing I did at Mizzou was join a sorority, which is both a mistake and a blessing. The greek community is very self absorbed, you will feel like your only friends are greek by the end of your freshman year. Being greek is a ridiculous time commitment, it is very hard to balance greek responsibilities with other activities, and your house will always expect you to put them first. If you do not drink, or are not interested in your social life revolving around alcohol, DO NOT join a fraternity or sorority, and probably reconsider coming to Mizzou. There is simply nothing to do on the weeked except for tailgaiting, bars, frat parties, and house parties. Nothing. If you are interested in such things, you can do them any day of the week. The bars here are great and you can find a couple that let in underagers. However, the town offers very little else in the way of entertainment. The local music venue The Blue Note hosts some great acts and there are always great speakers coming to campus. There is a very large amount of clubs on campus and they are all relatively easy to join. Do not expect for your professors to know you by name, the majority of your classes will be large and impersonal lectures. This is not bad, unless you need a recommendation for something, and then you will be scrambling to think of which professor "knows you" best. The school has a great reputation (especially in journalism), and the course offerings are varied and pretty easy to get the classes you want. I am studying abroad in the spring semester and it was relatively easy and inexpensive to manage. The school has a hoooorrible issue with bureaucracy, you will be shuffled around any time you try to do administrative things. A lot of times there is only one person who can solve a particular issue and they are NEVER there. For example, I have ventured over to the political science office to see my counselor (there is only one for all polisci students) literally 5 times this semester and she has not been in once. I do not know if I will stay at Mizzou because I am constantly frustrated by it, but the people who love it reeeeally love it.
