Major: English (This Major's Salary over time)
What can I say about Smith College? I see that there are a lot of good things said here mostly, but I would like to balance the scale. In my opinion, going to Smith and your being happy depends on the kind of person you are. If you like being in an all girls school surrounded by upper-class people, don't mind being isolated, and located in a town where all there is to do is either drink coffee, alcohol, eat, or go to CVS Pharmacy then go right ahead and apply to Smith College. I'm from New York, I love the city and I am used to going to places where a person has options, a nightlife, and diversity. Northampton is NOT, I REPEAT NOT DIVERSE. Seeing one black person, or one other Asian person does not spell diversity. Smith is not even all that diverse so if you are seeking a diverse school - this ain't the place. Smith throws parties and some of the weirdest fellows show up looking a mess and yet find their way into some desperate girl's dorm room getting a blow job with no hassel. We had an old grumpy white man who took it upon himself to masturbate in our Japanese tea house. Then we had a guy from UMASS strip naked, hide in the bushes and grab a poor smithie - she got away safely only for him to then jerk off in his car. He was caught, but good grief!Winter is horrible! We get mountains of snow (this is okay for some) and the ground is icy! We have a lot of water still on the ground even after it rainS, which then becomes ice and equals YOUR ass sliding up and down the pathways outside of the campus center. You also need boots because when it rains - it is not uncommon for your entire foot to be surrounded by ice cold muddy water.Oh, don't forget ladybug season… My ceiling and THE window of my dorm was surrounded by ladybugs, I called physical plant and their remedy for the situation was to suck the bugs with a vacuum and spray raid, which choked the hell out of me. I resorted to taping my windows up with gray duct tape like some movie to keep them out. It was creepy how some managed to get in despite all my efforts. If you are looking for a boyfriend, this ain't the place. There are some guys that come here from other schools and believe me, it is like throwing a piece of meat to a pack of hungry dogs. It is not hard for a guy to get laid here, all he needs to do is go to one of our parties - some girls are that easy so be prepared for it. If you are a not a fan of Silvia Plath beware. I wasn't and was ridiculed for not agreeing with the majority. Yes, sometimes having an opinion or one that does not agree with majority will put you in the hot seat. But still have an opinion and never lose your individuality for nothing! The work load is intense, some girls cry, or throw up during final season. I myself took a couple of shots of rum and coke with my best girlfriends. There are a lot of lesbians here and girls who are just confused…know who you are before you come here and don't let anyone tell you anything about you, your work, or your style. Now for some good things…You will meet some great and fantastic woman that will change your life forever. It is not the professor's who change your life more than the girls you become friends with and spend those wild nights with till the very break of dawn. When I first got there, I was lonely, battling ladybugs, and sure that coming here was the worst thing I could do for myself. But coming here has made me stronger, it has prepared me to face new challenges, adversity, and bull-shit and to come out swinging. I worked hard here, cried here, became sick here, and had no sex here but - I was able to become a PHENOMENAL woman here. I will graduate better than yesterday, smarter than today, and prepared for tomorrow. Before coming to Smith, I didn't believe I could do anything, or be anything and now I can. It isn't about the major, it isn't about the expensive tuition (though it can be), it is about being somewhere that is not home, staying strong, and making lemonade out of every lemon thrown at you. Smith was a place that reminded me of who I was every day, who I didn't want to be, and how there is a light at the end of the tunnel for every pain or victory faced. Not everyone is like me to have dealt with a lot as a black woman and is still standing strong even without a silver spoon in my mouth. But if you want a place that is challenging, a place that will teach you to survive outside your comfort zone, a place that will push to to be the best you ever wanted to be, then try Smith, or any school that WILL prepare you not just academically, but in many different aspects to face the world. That is ironic…coming from the bubble Smith is known for…
