I came here, again, like so many others, wanting to become a pilot. In fact, that is what I am still going to do with my life.

I got here and was disappointed after the first few weeks. I was unchallenged, and knew that I made a mistake coming here. This was a personal decision, and this place may be for you, but don't let the one day campus tour fool you. There is not much to do here at all unless you like going to dirty clubs near the beach. The faculty in the Aeronautical Science department, I have found, are very nice. Most of the students are very nice too. It is a small school, so you definitely have to put yourself out there. NO GIRLS! Honestly, I thought that it wouldn't bother me too much. I was here to learn, right? I don't care who you are, it will get on your nerves. Daytona Beach is an honest hole in the wall. I visited the homes of friends I made here who live in Florida, and know that there is MUCH better in the state. Even then, I am from the northeast. I missed the leaves changing colors, I missed the brisk fall air, etc.

The flight program is overpriced. Don't let them give you the reduced minimums BS. Train at a local airport that has an approved 141 program/syllabus. I remember reading message boards such as airlinepilotcentral, and almost everyone recommended avoiding this school if you want to fly. I didn't believe them. I didn't want to believe them. ERAU was the Holy Grail. Because I have to pay for my college education through student loans, I am going the route recommended by those who fly for the airlines now. Train at a local airport close to your state school. Get a degree in something outside of flying. The Aeronautical Science degree at ERAU is worth the paper it is printed on, and is useless. The airlines don't care what you have a degree in, just that you have one. ERAU flying is not experience. If you think you are going to come in here with zero flight experience, try to impress your friends by saying that you are going to become a pilot, you should consider a change of your major. You will wash out of the flight training like so many others who think it is a joke to fly an airplane. Just by going to ERAU is not going to land you a flying job for a major airline. More than likely you are going to be flying the right seat of a CRJ for a connection carrier for a few years making very little money. Flight time is experience to the airlines.

If it was for the friends I made here, I would definitely stay. I am going to miss them when I leave, honestly. I also feel bad that they are staying, but hey, its a personal decision. Everyone has their reasons to stay. I tried to make excuses to stay also. Thankfully I was accepted into another highly ranked University back in the Northeast. I am happy to say that I am transferring after this semester. I don't know what I would do if I had to stay another semester.

If you are looking at this school, PLEASE, make sure that you know what you are getting in to. There are a lot of negative reviews on this school, but you have to take them all into consideration, not just bad experiences. I didn't have any bad experiences here aside from not liking the atmosphere of the school or the area. Stay on top of all paperwork to avoid the Riddle Runaround.

I am very open to any of you HS kids who are looking at going here. If you have questions, please ASK ME. Don't make the same mistake I did. PLEASE.

questionI find that I am really interested in this school, I want to have a degree in aerospace engineering and I am also going to be a pilot. Why does the pilot program at ERAU not meet your standards? If I do get into the flight program with the proper determination, will I succeed at being a pilot through ERAU?
responseIt depends on the person. I went into it with all the determination you could imagine. Flying here somewhat breaks down your determination after a while. I flew back at home before I came down here, so there was a big difference that I noticed. It doesn't seem bad flying here in the beginning, but after you realize how much money you waste on oral lessons and simulators, as well as in the airplane, it starts to take a toll. The flight program here is too slow for progress, requires much repetition (which for those who can't fly an airplane is good), and is expensive. Most of the time it is about 30 minutes from engine start up to wheels up from DAB airport. Flying somewhere smaller, you can get off the ground in 10-15 minutes. All of that time starts to add up. I feel that I was beyond their syllabus, and that finishing my rating off campus under part 61 was much better for myself. You can succeed at being a pilot through ERAU if you have the money, if you consider succeeding by getting all of your ratings. You will not automatically get a job flying for an airline by leaving riddle as a flight student. In the next few years, the industry should be picking up because of the age 65 rule, the economy should be getting better, etc. It doesn't matter where you get your flight training, the airlines don't care. They want to see that you have a college degree and the hours in the logbook.
commentI agree with everything said by the original commentator. I am a freshman who just finished my first semester, and have been hugely disappointed with Riddle. Everything said on this site about how crappy the academics are may be true, but the flight department makes the academic side look like Harvard. They are dishonest in that they will tell you to your face that they are saving you money when they charge twice as much as 61 and 141 schools on the field! They will also tell you things about acceptance of outside flight training that just aren't true, in an effort to trick you into flying with them. They badmouth local FBO's maintainence and service in an effort to get you to spend more money at riddle for extra curricular flying. I have flown with CFI's at Riddle who have never landed on a soft field, and who believe they are capable of teaching soft field technique. Bottom line, if you don't really care about getting quality instruction, but want a name, ERAU is ok. If you want to become a skilled pilot, go elsewhere!
responseIm in high school and its my dream to go to this school. But now that i read your comment im not so sure, i mean i still want to go there really bad to become a pilot but i dont want to make a mistake. its like i dont want to believe that its a bad school. but please contact me on my email. _email_removed_
questionSo the aeronautical science degree is no good? will it be hard to find a job even if i graduate from this school?
commentI am neither a current or former student but i will most likely be a future student. Ive been in the industry as a lineman for 4 years now and i am also obtaining my commercial and CFI ratings this summer. Heres the deal for all you guys still in high school. You cant blame the school for the poor flight instruction or w/e. They are just hiring their own students to work for them on the cheap to help them build hours. thats the way every flight school works. If you want a good flight instructor than this what you need to do: Go to your local airport and get to know all the flight instructors there. Dont choose one thats younger than 25. You need to find some old guy thats been there and done that and just teaches to help pass the time. Thats what I did and you cant be expected to know what the difference is because you havnt got your foot in the door yet. All those young flight instructors that you will find at a 141 school are not going to care as much or teach as much. Find somebody that does it just for the love of it! Thats the secret to finding a good flight instructor. As for ER, you cant expect to learn alot from a flight instructor with only 300 hours. Oh ya and I almost forgot, on the subject of the Aerospace Science degree, the original commenter is right on about it being completely worthless. I dont care where you are going to start your aviation career whether its in the military or on the corporate side, or the airline side, everyone just looks for a 4 year degree and they dont care if your major was in UFO's. They all look for PIC time, NIGHT time, MULTI time, and they are going to look for somebody that is an overall good person and easy to get along with. Nobody likes to work with an arrogent pilot. Hope this helps!
questionHi I'm planing to transfer to ERAU i'm currently a Utah Valley University Student the programme over here is not bad its just the way they mange the fleet and the lake of planes that kills me. I just had a couple of question about ERAU first how hard is classes (courses) at ERAU ? Is it easy to fail classes over there? how much of course load and work to you have to do to pass classes? Because the university im in now is really easy hardly any work is it the same at ERAU

commentPerfect forum. Thanks for this information. I'll happily go elsewhere and spend a fraction and get some generic degree while I build up my flight time. Much appreciated.
